We foster an infant community called the “Nido”. The Nido, an Italian word for “nest,” is a warm, homelike environment where infants are respected, cared for and given the opportunity to develop independently. Everything in this nurturing environment is child-sized from the beautiful furniture and discovery materials to the shelves, plates and utensils used by the children. Our infants are free and encouraged to explore and learn in a safe atmosphere with loving, attentive, highly-trained adults supporting their every need.
Activities in our infant community meet each child’s requirement for cognitive development, social skills, emotional growth and physical coordination. We create a natural environment for each child to develop their gross motor skills such as sitting up, grasping, crawling and first steps. We wait for eye contact and responses or other indications (an infant’s form of communication), before we change their situation so they are a part of the communication process because they too are individuals with unique desires and needs.
We do not use or high chairs, bouncers or cribs in our infant room. This gives each child the freedom of movement to follow their instincts for eating, playing and sleeping on low mats. Our teachers are there to honor their bodies and minds and be present and provide for each child’s own rhythm and individual requirements.
